Hyderabad: A mobile phone snatcher was injured when the police opened fire on him at Chaderghat when he attempted to attack the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south east) on Saturday afternoon.
According to the police, the incident occurred near Victory Playground, Chaderghat on Saturday afternoon when DCP (south east), S Chaitanya Kumar was on his way to office at Saidabad after attending a meeting at the Hyderabad Police Commissioner office at Banjara Hills.
On the way, at Chaderghat road, the DCP noticed a man had snatched a mobile phone from a person and was running. The DCP and his Personal Security Officer (PSO) got down from the vehicle and chased the suspect to catch him. When the gunman caught the robber, he whipped out a knife and tried to attack the DCP and PSO.
“In the melee, the gunman fell on the ground. Immediately, the DCP took the weapon and fired three rounds. One round hit the robber,” Hyderabad Commissioner of Police, V C Sajjanar told media persons.
Though he was hit by a bullet, the robber ran away from the spot into the neighbouring locality behind the Victory Playground. He entered a residential building and later jumped into the playground when locals noticed him. He had suffered two bullet wounds. The police later tracked him down with the help of local people and shifted the man to a private hospital at Nampally for treatment. The PSO and the DCP were rushed to a private hospital where they were administered first aid.
On information, senior police officials reached the spot. The area was cordoned off and investigation started. The police are checking footage from surveillance cameras to ascertain if an individual robber was moving around or if a gang was scouting for gullible persons to snatch mobile phones.
