Hyderabad: Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) of Kolkata was one of the iconic football clubs of the country and over the years there has been a steady decline in their performances. In a major bid to change the fortunes of the club in a big way, the club has started a scheme to develop young talent. They are following in the footsteps of European clubs who have their own academies. For instance, Liverpool, Ajax, Barcelona and Manchester United all have their academies which groom such talented youth. Lionel Messi is a product of Barcelona’s academy.
According to Victor Amalraj, the former Indian captain and who was part of this iconic club, Hyderabad had been a supply chain for Mohammedan Sporting. “Most of Hyderabad’s footballers first stepped into Kolkata football by joining MSC. So there is a strong connection between Hyderabad and MSC. Most of our former Hyderabad footballers led or played for Mohammedan Sporting Club viz Salam , John Victor, Mhd Habib, Latiffudin Nazam, Habib Khan, Shabbir Ali and myself,’’ he said.
Looking at the gradual decline of the popularity of the game in the city, Amalraj said players in the city are now left without much hope. “This MSC scheme could help the players from the city,’’ he signed off.
