Hyderabad: An old-timer yet duty bound, popular actor Mohan Babu unintentionally conveys that he wears his traits on his sleeves.
“If someone in the cast or crew gets late for work, I get angry and I may even slap anyone on the sets. That’s why I fear not to direct any movie,” laughs the 69-year-old star who turned up half hour earlier than the scheduled time to have a chat with the media.
His usual-straightforward tone turned a bit philosophical while describing how his upcoming film ‘Son of India’ took its time to see the light of the day. “God has his own plans to execute. He decides everything about what you have to do, what’s the big picture, what’s your cinema in your real life. Everything is decided by him,” he says.
“I haven’t made this film because I’ve bank balance and I wish to spend money lavishly. The theme that director Diamond Ratna Babu came up with captivated me. It’s a story that connects with the youth. There are a few bold scenes (lesbian kissing scene), of course, they’re not forcibly incorporated but have their relevance to the story,” says Mohan Babu.
Feel so satisfied:
The actor says although films with this kind of tropes have come earlier in his career, ‘Son of India’ talks about the larger aspects of caste, politics and the intolerable attitude that still persists.
Films like ‘Assembly Rowdy’, ‘Punya Bhoomi Naa Desam’, ‘M Dharmaraju M.A.’ that came in 1994 — all have their underlying message. “But here a person who is duty-bound to his family and to his nation, getting a shabby treatment. His life gets ruined due to crooked politics from a public representative. He undergoes punishment for the crime that he hasn’t committed,” he says.
Caravanless acting life
Mohan Babu shares that back then during his years in the film industry there were no caravans.
“Everything we used to plan outside, whether it’s Ooty or name any locations. But female actors used to suffer due to unavailability of such vans back then. Now, things have changed a lot,” he adds.
The actor says that ‘Son of India’ was first planned for OTT space. “So the bold sequences would have taken good space if it was for OTT. When we revised our decision to release it in theatres, we had to face the sensor cuts,” he adds.
