Monsoon returns to Hyderabad with heavy overnight rains

Hyderabad: After a brief hiatus, the monsoon returned to the city and its suburbs, lashing several areas on Wednesday night.
Heavy rains that began late in the night pounded the city and surrounding areas, with the western parts of Hyderabad and the outskirts towards Patancheru bearing the brunt until the early hours.
The heaviest downpour was recorded in the western parts, with areas around the University of Hyderabad receiving 148.5 mm of rain, followed by MMTS Lingampally with 114 mm. Chandanagar also recorded significant rainfall of 109.8 mm, while nearby areas such as Gachibowli received 81.3 mm.
Residents in these parts woke up to the aftermath of the downpour—overflowing streets, inundated cellars, and fallen tree branches across several localities. Morning traffic was severely affected in BHEL, Patancheru, Serilingampalli, Chandanagar, and Gachibowli, with vehicles wading through waterlogged stretches. It took hours for the water to recede, as civic staff and traffic police struggled to restore normalcy.
