Hyderabad: Evening colleges, a popular academic system in the 1980s and 1990s, are once again gaining popularity in the State as more engineering institutions have introduced BE/BTech programmes for working professionals, with classes scheduled in the evening.

For the academic year 2026-27, 14 engineering colleges have announced admissions to evening BE/BTech programmes, up from 11 colleges last year. With the addition of new institutions, the intake for evening UG engineering programmes has increased to 1,170.

The colleges have mainly introduced core engineering branches such as Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mining Engineering. Some institutions have also launched BE/BTech Computer Science and Engineering programmes.

These colleges and programmes were a common feature in the 1980s and 1990s, enabling several professionals to pursue courses including engineering, law and management, among others. However, over a period, as demand dwindled, the colleges shifted their focus to daytime programmes.

With rapid technological advancements, there has been a huge demand for upskilling and reskilling of the workforce in the country. This prompted the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to introduce engineering programmes for working professionals in 2023.

Given the increasing demand for these programmes among working professionals, the Telangana Council of Higher Education introduced the Telangana Engineering Common Entrance Test for Working Professionals and entrusted Osmania University with conducting the test.

Working professionals with a diploma in the relevant field are eligible to apply. They should also be employed in a registered industry or organisation located within a 75-km radius of the institution or their residence.

Candidates qualifying in the entrance test will be admitted to the second year of BE/BTech. Classes will be conducted from 6 pm to 9 pm on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends.

The last date to apply online through the website https://www.tgecetwp.in/ is August 14. The registration fee is Rs 3,000. Applications can also be submitted with a late fee of Rs 1,500 up to August 22. Hall tickets can be downloaded from the website from August 26, and the test is scheduled for August 30. The results will be declared on September 5.
