Mounting debts drive tenant farmer to end life in Siddipet

A 30-year-old tenant farmer, who reportedly owed Rs 15 lakh after suffering farming losses, ended his life at Palugugadda village in Siddipet district. He had pledged his 10-gunta land to borrow money and was reportedly worried about losing it.

Siddipet: Mounting debts drove a tenant farmer to end his life at Palugugadda village in Jagadevpur mandal on Thursday. The deceased was Lokula Sairam (30). The farmer, who just owns 10 guntas of land, had taken another one and half acre land for rent. Since he had suffered losses in farming during the last few years, his debts rose to Rs 15 lakhs. To clear the debts, he reportedly pledged his 10 guntas of land with a man and borrowed some amount.

Since he could not clear the debts he borrowed from the lender, the farmer was on the brink of losing his land. Worried over losing the land and unable to clear the debts, he ended life by hanging on Wednesday evening.

The farmer, who went to his field on Wednesday morning, could not return home until evening when the family reached the field and found him hanging. He was survived by his wife Sujatha, two daughters and a son, all the three were aged below 10 years. The police registered a case and the probe was on.
