Mumbai: A strong Mumbai Indians side will begin their bid to end a five-year title drought in the Indian Premier League when they take on a depleted Kolkata Knight Riders in their tournament opener here on Sunday.

It has been a while since Mumbai Indians, the joint most successful team in the IPL, last lifted a trophy, which they won five times between 2013 and 2020.

Last year, the Hardik Pandya-led side finished third after losing to runners-up Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. However, Mumbai Indians will feel they have all bases covered to challenge for what would be a record-extending sixth title this year.

A new-look Rohit Sharma will be keen to get back among the runs, while Mumbai Indians’ all-round strength makes them a side to beat once again. The squad includes a big chunk of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Pandya, Tilak Varma, and Jasprit Bumrah.

MI’s overseas talent bench features wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton, Sherfane Rutherford, Corbin Bosch, New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner, Will Jacks, AM Ghazanfar, and Trent Boult, who will be expected to pair with Bumrah.

In Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, MI have two experienced Indian bowlers, while Naman Dhir could continue playing the role of finisher, which he executed successfully last year.

The challenge will be to find the right playing combination, utilise the Impact Player rule effectively, and notch up early wins, as Mumbai Indians are notorious for slow starts in the IPL.

Visitors Kolkata Knight Riders carry some local flavour with skipper Ajinkya Rahane and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, but they face several challenges even before the first ball.

KKR’s biggest task will be finalising a bowling attack, which looks far from ideal after the auction. Mustafizur Rahman was released by the franchise on BCCI instructions, while India bowlers Akash Deep and Harshit Rana are out due to injuries.

Blessing Muzarabani may play a key role in the bowling line-up, but much will depend on Varun Chakravarthy. KKR also have former CSK players Rachin Ravindra, who should bolster their batting, and Matheesha Pathirana. Tim Seifert is the primary wicketkeeper-batter, while Cameron Green and Sunil Narine provide all-round options.
