Hyderabad: A controversy has erupted after a group of Muslim girl students from Shantiniketan Women’s College here in Erragadda alleged they were misled into attending Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s public meeting at Nizam College on Monday, instead of a scholarship protest they were promised.
The students claimed BJYM volunteers told them they were being taken to raise their voice over a scholarship issue.
However, after reaching the venue on Monday, the students claimed they realised they had been brought to a large political rally, where they said they felt frightened and unsafe because of the massive crowd.
Parents also alleged the organisers deceived the students, taking them to the event without clearly informing them about its nature. The issue gained attention on Tuesday after a video of the burqa-clad students at the rally went viral on social media, triggering criticism and questions over how the students were mobilised.
Responding to the controversy, college principal Amba Ramaswamy said the management had been informed that the students were being taken only for a protest related to scholarships.
She said the organisers never disclosed that the destination was Amit Shah’s rally and that the college had been misled. The principal apologised to the students and their parents, expressing regret over the incident.
