Nagarkurnool: Tension prevailed in Tadur in the district when two farmers attempted to die by suicide in protest against land acquisition and accused that land owned by landlords were being spared for developing a bypass in the area.
While one farmer, Gunashekhar, tried to consume pesticide, another farmer, Kurumaiah, doused himself with petrol and tried to immolate himself. However, locals and police stopped them and brought the situation under control. It all happened when a team of revenue officials along with police personnel arrived at Tadur for conducting a survey for the National Highway 167 bypass as part of the Hyderabad to Nandyal road development.
The farmers in the villages raised objections against the survey, citing that they would lose their fertile lands and livelihood if the lands were acquired. The farmers alleged that officials were conducting survey against the survey numbers identified earlier and as per the maps. They alleged that officials were sparing landlords and finalizing the route, which passes through their fertile lands.
Unmindful of the farmers’ objections, the officials conducted the survey, triggering heated arguments. Amidst these arguments, the two farmers tried to die by suicide, according to reports.
