Nalgonda: CPI(M) Politburo member BV Raghavulu has demanded that the Central and State governments immediately come to the aid of farmers facing severe hardship due to crop losses.
He expressed deep concern, noting that paddy and cotton farmers in Nalgonda had suffered heavy losses to the extent that they were unable to recover even the capital invested in cultivation.
CPI(M) leaders visited paddy and cotton fields in different areas, including Cherlapally in Nalgonda mandal.
Later, addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, the senior CPI(M) leader pointed out that, in many areas, the paddy harvest had yielded only empty husks or chaff rather than grain. He added that even though market prices for grain had risen, farmers were not benefiting and, due to the lack of yield, were facing acute financial distress.
Raghavulu further noted that the cotton crop had also been severely damaged. He said the leaves of cotton plants had withered due to the intense heat and that the crop had been completely damaged in the absence of rain.
He stated that the assistance announced by the Central government to support farmers struggling with crop losses was inadequate. “Losses incurred by the farmers should be taken into account and immediate aid be provided to them,” Raghavulu demanded.
Given the current situation, marked by significant crop losses in the agricultural sector and employment challenges in rural areas, he stressed the need to immediately launch employment guarantee works.
The State government should exert pressure on the Central government to initiate employment guarantee works immediately, he demanded.
