Suryapet: Nalgonda MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday demanded that the State government reinstall the statue of former prime minister Indira Gandhi which was removed from Indira Chowk in Huzurnagar town in Suryapet district on Friday.
Protesting against the removal of the statue, Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with party members, staged a sit-in at the main centre. The Congress members also raised slogans against the removal of the statue. The former TPCC president expressed his ire with officials of R&B Department for removing Indira Gandhi’s statue that was installed in the town about 40 years ago, under the pretext of road expansion. The officials did not inform the party leaders about the removal of the statue, he said, and demanded suspension of Deputy Engineer of R and B for the act.
The State government should immediately order the local officials to reinstall the statue of Indira Gandhi at Indira Chowk failing which Congress will intensify its agitation, he cautioned.
He also urged the officials of R and B to make it public as to who ordered the removal of the statue. The officials removed the statue using cranes with 100 police personnel deployed at Indira chowk. The police also arrested the Congress leaders who tried to stop the removal of the statue. The statue of former Chief Minister in undivided Andhra Pradesh Y S Rakashekhar Reddy in the town was also removed under the pretext of road expansion, he added.
