Khammam: The progress of communists was essential for the well-being of the nation, stated Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary, MLA, Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao.

A massive rally wherein hundreds of CPI ranks wearing red shirts marched in the streets of Khammam marking the party’s centennial formation day celebrations here on Thursday. Addressing a gathering of the party ranks later, the CPI leader said communist ideology has been gaining importance in the country.

Both the CPI and RSS came into existence at the same time, while the latter was working for the disintegration of the nation, CPI has been fighting for the rights of the poor and working class for the past 99 years. At the same time the Congress party worked to protect the interests of capitalists.

Because of the struggles staged by CPI several laws have been enacted and schemes have been introduced for the welfare of the downtrodden sections. The world famous Telangana Armed Struggle has changed the life of Telangana people, Sambasiva Rao noted.

The struggle which was started with the call from communist leaders like Ravi Narayana Reddy, Makhdoom Mohiuddin and Baddam Yella Reddy brought light into the lives of people. It ended the feudal system and the poorer sections were able to gain land holdings.

Communists have played a key role in the Telangana Statehood movement. Khammam district has got a special place in the communist movement. Leaders like Nallamala Giriprasad, Mohamme Rajab Ali, Devuri Seshagiri Rao, S Ramanatham, M Komariah and others made many sacrifices for the welfare of the common public, he noted.

Sambasiva Rao complained that some political leaders who switched loyalties quite often were criticising communists. As the communal forces gain a foothold in the country, the need for communists has increased more than ever for the protection of secularism.

Senior party leaders like Puvvada Nageswara Rao, Mohammed Moulana, Dr. P Gorky and 39 others were felicitated. The party leaders B Hemath Rao and others were present.
