Hyderabad: In a brief yet poignant ceremony, naval officers of Hyderabad station paid homage to the martyrs on the 49th Navy Day at Veerula Sainika Smarak (War Memorial), Parade Ground, Secunderabad here on Friday.
Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 in commemoration of Operation Trident, the attack launched by the Indian Navy on Karachi harbour during 1971’s Indo-Pakistan war. It was for the first time that an anti-ship missile was used in the operation which was conducted on the night of December 4-5 and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani land assets.
According to a press release, Commodore (Retd) AVS Madhava Rao laid a wreath on behalf of naval veterans at Hyderabad. Station Commander (Navy) Rear Admiral V Raja Sekhar, VSM, then laid a wreath.
Taking cognisance of prevalent Covid-19 protocols, the traditional Ceremonial Guard was not paraded this year, it said, adding that outreach to community in the form of assistance to orphanages, blood donation, audio/video displays at prominent public places would be part of the Navy Week activities.
