Think of Telugu rap, and surely ‘Nawab Gang’ might have popped into your head. The rap band which started by displaying the lives of the middle class in the society through their rap songs on the streets has now reached the silver screen and aims to go even further.
The gang of ten talented rappers will be seen performing the opening song in Chiranjeevi’s upcoming flick ‘Bholaa Shankar’. “We have all grown up watching Chiranjeevi garu in the films and it is really wonderful to be giving the title track for his film. The song is going to be about a guy who is from the old city, his power and the street wave,” shares Pramod, popularly known as Asura from the Nawab Gang.
In addition to ‘Bholaa Shankar’, Nawab Gang is also working for a track in ‘Chor Bazaar’ which will feature director Puri Jagannadh’s son Akash Puri.
However, this is not the first time that Nawab Gang is contributing to the Telugu cinema. “We have composed two tracks – ‘Abadham’ and ‘Nuvve Hero’ for Vijay Deverakonda produced film ‘Meeku Mathrame Cheptha’, starring Tharun Bhascker. Also, a few of our retro rewinds were played in Rana’s show ‘No.1 Yaari’,” Asura proudly shares.
Inspiring Telugu rap lovers
Beyond the excitement of working for Telugu cinema, Nawab Gang finds it to be an opportunity to inspire many towards Telugu rapping.
“We want to improve the hip-hop scene in Hyderabad. And so, we want to inspire many who have the talent to embrace the genre of music that’s slowly finding its popularity across the world,” shares Asura.
To encourage budding talent, the rappers have come up with a challenge called the ‘8 Bars Challenge’ where a free track is provided and the person should sing 8 bars – lines created by them. “Through this challenge, we want to spot people who are genuinely interested in rapping and guide them in their journey,” he adds.
Message-driven tracks
Beyond just music and lyrics, Nawab Gang’s rap songs focus more on the message being delivered. From the lives lived by middle-class boys to many contemporary issues faced by many, Nawab Gang tries to pick inspirations from regular day-to-day lives.
“Our recent track ‘Masthundi Life’ also talked about life being good despite all the odds. We have another track coming up, which could be a lesson for Hyderabad hip-hop – asking people not to sit cocooned in their boxes but come out and fly,” Asura shares.
He also adds that he and his gang have a packed schedule with albums and tracks until November next year.
