Hyderabad: Members of the Nepali community in the city have requested citizens not to stereotype the entire community over the alleged involvement of a few individuals in recent criminal cases, including murder, robbery and theft. They said such generalisations were unfair and harmful to thousands of law-abiding workers in the State.
Tek B Bhandari, General Secretary of the Telangana Nepalese Welfare Association, said the spread of messages portraying ‘Nepali workers’ as criminals had created fear and damaged the community’s long-standing reputation.
“Several generations of Nepalis have served across India as trusted Gorkha security guards and have built their livelihoods through honest work and faithfulness across the city and the State,” he said. The association estimated that between 40,000 and 50,000 Nepalis are currently employed in Telangana in various sectors, particularly in security services.
Bhandari urged employers and residents to verify the credentials of Nepali workers through the association instead of relying on rumours or social media posts. The organisation is prepared to verify the identity of workers and issue authenticated certificates bearing its official seal to help distinguish genuine workers from impersonators or offenders. He added that maintaining verified records would also assist law enforcement agencies if required.
Meanwhile, the association’s representatives have also appealed to the Telangana government to consider extending insurance coverage to Nepali security personnel, noting that many of them are responsible for protecting high-value residential and commercial properties across the State.
