Hyderabad: To ensure hygiene and a decent workplace for fish vendors, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is constructing fish markets in the city. While two of these facilities have already been opened recently, work is progressing fast on three more.
The markets located in Kukatpally and Nacharam have been opened for public recently. “Two markets in Begum Bazaar and one in Mallapur will be inaugurated soon,” the GHMC said. The estimated cost to build them was put around Rs 19.40 crore.
These facilities, besides providing a decent workplace to fish vendors, are also aimed at easing traffic congestion. The recently inaugurated market in Kukatpally Housing Board Colony (KPHB)-Phase 6 is one such example where traffic woes have decreased. Before the market was constructed, traffic snarls were a common sight here as the vendors used to sell fish on the roads and pavements, owing to space crunch.
“Earlier, fish and meat stalls were set up on roads and pavements. Lack of parking further added to the woes. The new market is a big relief to commuters,” said Sai Teja, a resident of Kukatpally.
Another resident from KPHB Road number 4 said after the market was built, sanitation too had improved as the fish or meat was not exposed to unhygienic conditions. “During monsoon, vendors used to face hardships due to lack of proper shelter and the premises used to turn unhygienic. But now, vendors and customers are happy and the fish and meat is not exposed to flies or unhygienic conditions,” said D Vidyulatha.
Model market
A new model market is also being built by the GHMC in Old Lingampally near Narayanguda at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore.
The foundation stone was laid by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao in January this year. There was a market existing at the same place but the decades old one had to be demolished as the structure was in a dilapidated condition. Following this, the new market is being built as a ground-plus-three floor structure along with a cellar for parking.
This new facility, besides providing a shelter to vegetable vendors and customers, is expected to ease traffic in and around the Old Lingampally area. According to GHMC officials, work on the market was underway at a brisk pace. “To address the needs of the people, the State government has taken up scores of developmental works and the model market near Narayanguda is one of them. The works are being executed swiftly,” officials said.
