Hyderabad: Adopting a mission mode, Telangana is continuing the task of rejuvenating the lakes and as a part of the exercise, 61 lakes in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction are getting rejuvenated with Rs 95.54 crore.
According to the civic body officials, works have already started at five lakes and at remaining water bodies, the works are in tender stage.
Restoration of weirs and sluice, bund strengthening and fencing have been taken up at the lakes in addition to sewage diversion. While the restoration and strengthening works are being taken up to avoid flood-like situations during downpours, stopping the sewage from entering the lakes will decrease pollution, said a GHMC official.
Nayanamma Kunta also known as Baspalli Cheruvu located in Serilingampally, Appa Cheruvu and Palle Cheruvu Rajendra Nagar in Rajendra Nagar and Bathukamma Kunta in LB Nagar are some among the 61 lakes that will be rejuvenated.
Earlier too, the State government has taken major environmental conservation works and proposed the rejuvenation of 63 lakes with Rs 94.17 crore. The Hyderabad Lakes & Water Bodies Management Circle (HL&WBM) and GHMC have fenced these water bodies in addition to executing civil works that include developing walking tracks, bund strengthening, landscaping/ plantation and illumination.
“Works at most of the lakes have been completed while a few have not been rejuvenated due to court cases,” said a GHMC official.
In addition to these, 14 more lakes are being rejuvenated by various companies under their Corporate Social Responsibility with works underway at 10 lakes and a MoU to protect the remaining four will be signed soon.
Meanwhile, water hyacinth is being removed using Floating Trash Collectors at all the lakes in GHMC jurisdiction in a phased manner and the garbage is also being fished out by the corporation with an additional fund.
