Hyderabad: Obstetricians at Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazar performed a rare exploratory laparotomy surgery on a new mother who went into a coma due to severe internal bleeding, low blood pressure and slow heart rate.

Satyavathi, 27, from Thettekunta village in Nalgonda district, visited a local hospital when she was bleeding profusely in the 31st week of her pregnancy. Doctors advised her to be taken to Maternity Hospital here, where she was admitted on June 21.

Months after she was placed on observation status, Satyavathi gave birth to a healthy baby on Wednesday by a surgical caesarean section or C-section. However, the new mother went into a coma, fighting to hold her newborn baby.

Soon, the senior doctors including Superintendent Dr. Rajyalakshmi conducted a two-hour exploratory laparotomy surgery on the new mother to control excessive internal bleeding. They administered a transfusion of 13 units of blood.

Currently, Satyavathi is said to be in a stable condition.

Exploratory laparotomy is a procedure in which the abdomen is opened up for exploratory purposes and is done only in medical emergencies.
