NGOs prepare and distribute 10 lakh seed balls across Telangana
NGOs in Telangana prepared and distributed 10 lakh seed balls containing banyan, neem, mango, and other trees to boost green cover, involving students and promoting environmental conservation across the State
Siddipet: In an effort to boost green cover in Telangana, Nava Samaja Nirmana Samithi founder Lakkarsu Prabhakar Varma and Life NGO founder Devaragattu Balaprasad have prepared around 10 lakh seed balls, which are being distributed across the State.
The seed balls, containing quality seeds procured from Bangalore, include species such as banyan, tamarind, mango, bael, Indian gooseberry, sacred fig, neem, Manila tamarind, and other trees. The two NGOs have been carrying out this initiative for nine consecutive years, targeting vacant lands, forest areas, and roadside stretches.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Prabhakar Varma, who is also the State president of Perika Sangam, said the loss of green cover had created a serious environmental imbalance. He noted that monkeys were invading residential areas, while birds and other wildlife were struggling to find sufficient food due to the scarcity of fruit-bearing trees.
To address these issues, he said the initiative aimed to set an example for others to follow. Students from residential schools in Domakonda and Kamareddy were involved in preparing the seed balls.
Marking the launch of the programme, Prabhakar Varma, a resident of Ravurukala in Siddipet, sowed seed balls on the outskirts of the village on Monday, along with Gannamaneni Sridevi Chandar Rao, Mamilla Ilaiah, Prasanth, Ramu, Yelupula Arjun, and others.
He urged people to shun plastic use as part of their contribution to environmental conservation and invited individuals and organisations to approach the NGOs if they wished to distribute seed balls in their localities.
