Hyderabad: The Hyderabad unit of National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed the first supplementary charge-sheet against ISI operative Imran Yakub Giteli alias Giteli before the special court for NIA cases in Vijayawada in connection with the Visakhapatnam espionage case.
Giteli, a native of Godhra in Panchmahal in Gujarat, allegedly raised funds for espionage activities in India. A press release issued by NIA said the case was initially registered by Counter Intelligence wing of Intelligence Department, Vijayawada, for the conspiracy hatched by Pakistani ISI agents along with their associates based in India to carry out terrorist acts in India.
In furtherance of their conspiracy, they were involved in espionage activities, collecting sensitive and classified official information relating to vital defence installations to threaten the integrity, security and sovereignty of India.
The NIA re-registered the case and took over the probe. It had earlier filed charge-sheet against 14 accused persons including three civilians with business interests in Pakistan on June 15, 2020 in this case.
Further investigation established that Giteli was in contact with Pakistani agents and used to meet them during his visits to Pakistan. On the instructions of Pakistani ISI agents, he was transferring money into the accounts of Navy personnel in lieu of passing sensitive and strategic information. He was raising funds for terrorist activities in the garb of illegal cloth business.
Investigation also revealed an organized wide network of Pakistan-based espionage activities in India utilising services of operatives like Giteli.
