Hyderabad: The Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, announced a milestone with the successful performance of complex Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedures for supraventricular arrhythmias in two young children under Dr. Oruganti Sai Satish, Fellowship in Electrophysiology.

The first case was of a 15-year-old boy from Khammam, suffering from recurrent palpitations, chest discomfort, and sweating since early childhood. He was diagnosed to have right sided heart along with reversed positions of major organs in thorax and abdomen.

The challenges were distorted cardiac anatomy, young age, difficulty in the positioning of catheters and the interpretation of abnormal multiple electrical circuits causing palpitations. These were overcome with help of 3D mapping and the abnormal extra electrical pathway along with another circuit causing refractory palpitations was ablated with RF energy.

Another case was of a 14-year-old student from Hyderabad who experienced more than 25 episodes of palpitations within the last four months. He was found to have abnormal extra electricity generating focus in the left side of the heart near the mitral valve. With the help of 3D mapping, the focus was successfully ablated with RF energy.

After procedure both patients are totally free of palpitations and the procedures were done free of cost under TG state ARSR/CMRF, NIMS said in a press release. The success of these procedures positions NIMS as a centre of excellence for advanced cardiac rhythm management in both Telugu states at affordable cost to the needy patients in government sector.

The other team members include Dr.Hemanth , Dr.Sunita , Dr.Ajeya, Dr.Mounika, senior resident, Dr. Anurag, Cath lab technicians – Prameela, Rama Rao and nursing officer, Florence.
