Nirmal: Elders of a ward in Khanapur municipality drew criticism after reportedly deciding to conduct a draw of lots to unanimously select a councillor by collecting a deposit of Rs 25 lakh from each candidate, following stiff competition among contestants.
It was learnt that the ward elders secretly convened a meeting on Saturday night and resolved to collect the deposit amount from candidates and organise a draw of lots to pick a councillor in place of elections. They reportedly proposed to return the money to the remaining candidates after the selection. Incidentally, the ward had received nominations from more than 10 candidates.
However, the elders were forced to reconsider the move after one of the candidates opposed the decision. They subsequently postponed a meeting scheduled for Sunday to Monday.
