Warangal: The stage is set for the 19th convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, which will be held in virtual mode, on Saturday.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be the Chief Guest while former Chairman of ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space and Drafting Committee Chairman of National Education Policy (NEP), Dr K Kasthurirangan, will be the Guest of Honour. Over 1,700 students will be participating in the ceremony virtually.
NITW Director Prof NV Ramana Rao will preside over the function, while the members of the Board of Governance (BoG), Deans, Advisers, Registrar, Heads of the Departments, Senators will attend the programme.
After the award of degrees, Registrar S Goverdhan Rao will announce the names of the Roll of Honour Gold Medal Winners and the name of Institute Gold Medal Winner. In each branch of engineering, the topper of B Tech class is awarded the Roll of honour Gold Medal and the topper of all branches put together is awarded the Institute Gold Medal.
Ganesh S from the Department of Mechanical Engineering will be receiving the Institute Gold Medal in the convocation for being the student with the highest CGPA among all the branches of engineering.
A record number of 1,740 of students will be receiving their degrees virtually in this convocation. The following are the statistics of the students graduating this year:
NITW-SIEMENS Centre of Excellence to be inaugurated today
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate the NITW-SIEMENS Centre of Excellence (CoE) set up under the theme “Digital manufacturing – Industry 4.0.” The inauguration will be a virtual function on the sidelines of the 19th convocation of the NITW on Saturday.
“This CoE will support the Government of India initiative of Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan or Self-reliant India. In this CoE, 13 state-of-the-art laboratories with sophisticated equipment and Industry run software are being set up. Lot of transformation is happening in the manufacturing sector in the form of emerging technologies, like IOT, Machine Learning and Digitisation.
This has necessitated developing trained manpower in these emerging areas. The facilities in the CoE will be helpful not only to the students of NIT Warangal but also to all the students in the State of Telangana and nearby States. This CoE will also help the MSME Industry in the region. It has the mandate to train 30,000 industry-ready technical personnel,” said a press note. The CoE was established at a cost of Rs 174 crore shared by SIEMENS and NIT Warangal. The Minister will also inaugurate NITW-HITACHI Energy Smart Electric Grid Laboratory.
The Department of Electrical Engineering of the Institute had started a new M Tech programme in Smart Electric Grid (SEG) in the year 2020-21 with the industrial support from Hitachi Energy. As part of this programme, Hitachi Energy is setting up a Smart Electric Grid laboratory. The Institute received Rs 80 lakh worth equipment as on date, which is commissioned at NITW with a built-up area of 2,160 sq ft.
The Minister of Education will also lay the foundation stone of the following buildings/facilities including two separate academic blocks for the Civil Engineering Department and the Mechanical Engineering Department. Each block with G+9 floors, of floor height 3.30 m with a total built-up area of around 33,000 sq m for each block will be constructed making use of Precast Concrete Technology to minimise the execution time. They will have state-of-the-art equipment for the purpose of academic activities and research. Foundation will also be laid for the construction of Major Dhyan Chand Multipurpose Sports Facility Complex with grounds for different sports and games and also an indoor games complex for ensuring all-round development of the students, as part of Fit India Programme.
