Hyderabad: Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) has provisionally extended recognition to all the existing post-graduate (PG) medical courses for 2020-21 offered by government and private teaching hospitals in Telangana, according to a recent notification.
“In view of the Covid pandemic, some medical colleges were inspected physically, some by virtual mode and the rest have submitted sworn affidavits. Therefore, the process of inspection and recognition of PG courses is not uniform and the recognition of new PG seats or those that have been increased have not been completed,” MARB said.
Due to difficulties in conducting thorough inspections during the pandemic, the Medial Assessment Board of NMC has decided to provisionally recognise all the PG medical courses for one more year.
Earlier, in September, the NMC, which is the regulatory body of medical education in the country, had written letters to all the vice-chancellors and principals of health universities and teaching hospitals informing them that permission for their existing PG medical seats will remain valid for one more year or as notified by the local Health University in the States.
For fresh renewals and granting of additional PG medical seats, the teaching hospitals must approach the Commission after the extension period. The NMC warned teaching hospitals to ensure they seek timely renewal of PG sears, which if not taken up could result in stoppage of PG courses.
The NMC will conduct three different kinds of inspections to recognise PG medical seats including recognition of PG courses, recognition against increased intake of PG courses and renewal of recognition of PG courses. Overall, there are close to 1000 PG seats in government and private teaching hospitals under Convenor quota of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS).
