Hyderabad: Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said the Congress party was against the NDA government’s National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) as it was a ploy to do away with reservations in jobs. As part of NMP, the Modi government has chalked out plans to sell stakes in a majority of Public Sector Units (PSUs). If PSUs, are weakened, then it would indirectly affect reservations, said Mallikarjun Kharge while addressing media persons here on Friday.

“During its regime, the Congress party had set up several PSUs and created assets for the country. But the Modi government is now leasing and even selling PSUs for the benefit of a few private companies,” he said. In 1991, former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao had encouraged foreign investments but PSUs were not disturbed. On the contrary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was selling PSUs, which would not only result in financial losses but would also affect the common man indirectly in terms of jobs and reservations, he charged.

The Leader of the Opposition pointed out that first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had introduced the concept of a mixed economy, which aided in the creation of several PSUs. But the Modi government wants to sell roads, railway stations and tracks, power generation plants and one should not be surprised, if the NDA government permits leasing of Nagarjuna Sagar dam in the future, he said.

The Congress leader reminded that establishing PSUs in Hyderabad had triggered economic growth, besides rapid industrialisation. This paved way for financial and social development in this part of the country, he said. Taking a dig at the NDA government, Mallikarjun Kharge said during Independence Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that huge investments would come up in the country. “I wonder how these investments will come at a time when the assets are being sold out,” said Mallikarjun Kharge.

He said over 360 PSUs were employing nearly nine lakh regular employees and about 4.90 lakh contract employees. Railways employ a total of 12.53 lakh employees, Department of Posts employs 4.18 lakh employees. “If all these companies are sold off, what will be the future of these employees and their families?” questioned the Leader of Opposition.
