Hyderabad: Telangana has not witnessed any communal violence or any other major law and order situation since the formation of separate Telangana, said Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy here on Friday.

However, Telangana registered 4.6 per cent increase in crime rate in 2021 compared to Covid-hit 2020.

Interacting with media persons during the annual press meet at the police headquarters, he said except for stray incidents at Bhainsa in Nirmal district, there was no communal violence in the State for the last seven years.

Referring to Maoists issue, the police chief said that Maoists activities were confined to the bordering areas between Telangana and neighbouring Chhattisgarh. In all, 98 extremists were arrested while 133 of them surrendered.

The police seized eight firearms apart from ammunition and explosives and Rs.1.26 lakh in cash. Reddy said the police department would file a charge-sheet against the arrested over-ground activists of CPI (Maoist) and strive for obtaining conviction of them.

The desperate efforts of the Maoists to revive the movement in the State were effectively foiled by the police during the joint operations carried out with the State and Central forces, he said.

“No activities of underground armed formation of CPI (Maoist) are noticed in the State. Timely dissemination of information led to the occurrence of three exchanges of fire. This resulted in the killing of half a dozen naxals in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district,” he said.
