Hyderabad: A 19-year-old student, who was reportedly depressed over not having proper gadgets to attend online classes, allegedly hanged herself in her house in Shadnagar near here.

The incident took place on November 2 but came to light on Monday after Delhi-based student organizations raised the issue since the girl was a BSc Mathematics student in Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi.

According to the Shadnagar police, Aishwarya Reddy, a resident of Shadnagar had joined the Delhi college in March 2019 and had returned to the city this March when the Covid-19 pandemic began. Police, quoting her relatives, said she was depressed over not having a good laptop or even a smartphone to attend online classes. In a suicide note purportedly written by her, Aishwarya wrote that her family was facing financial issues ‘because’ of her and that she felt she was burden to the family.

Police said Aishwarya, who came from a poor family with her father being a mechanic, was found hanging in one of the rooms in their two-room house on November 2. Though relatives rushed her to a hospital, doctors declared her brought dead. A case under Section 174 of CrPC was registered by the Shadnagar police that day itself and investigation was already on.
