Hyderabad: In a surprising exclusion, not a single player from the traditional cricket powerhouses—India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and England—has been featured in the International Cricket Council’s ‘Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024.’

The exclusion, as one might imagine, has sparked discussions in the cricketing world, with fans wondering why players from their favorite teams were snubbed.

The criteria for selection are being questioned by cricket fans following the ICC’s announcement. However, in terms of participation, the popular teams, including India, have not played many ODIs recently. In fact, India has only played three ODIs in 2024 against Sri Lanka, where they lost two games and tied one.

The absence of players in the ICC-named team of the year could be attributed to limited participation and lackluster performances, some opine.

Meanwhile, the team includes four players from Sri Lanka, three from Pakistan, three from Afghanistan, and one from the West Indies.

With Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka as the captain, the team features Saim Ayub (Pakistan), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan), Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka), Kusal Mendis (WK) (Sri Lanka), Sharfane Rutherford (West Indies), Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan), Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan), Haris Rauf (Pakistan), and AM Ghazanfar (Afghanistan).
