Hyderabad: Arjuna awardee para athlete Madasu Srinivasa Rao, a multiple medal winner for the country, passed away in a hospital in Hyderabad on Thursday morning. He was 65 and survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.
Srinivasa Rao has been suffering from Carcinoma cancer for brief while and had been in coma before succumbing on Thursday. Hailing from Garrepalli village in Sultanabad Mandal from Peddapalli district, he represented the country in the paralympics, world championships, Asian meets in badminton, shooting, table tennis, fencing, weightlifting. He also participated in various marathon runs in a wheelchair.
He won a gold medal in the 1996 para world shooting championship held in London and then won several medals at the international level. In 2002, he won a gold in the world para badminton championship. The very next year, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award. In 2010, he also represented India in the Asian Para Fencing Championship held in China. He won a silver in 2004 men’s doubles badminton event and another silver medal in men’s singles open category in 2006 in Israel. He also participated in the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in Delhi in Queen’s Badminton Relay.
Srinivasa Rao has worked as a mechanic in RTC. He always had a keen interest in sports and started pursuing his dream. He won the award for best para athlete in the country in 1994 from then president Shankar Dayal Sharma. He also was the founding secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Para Sports Association. He has been a regular participant at the Mumbai Marathon since 2006 and he last competed in 2018 at Bengaluru 10k marathon where he had won a silver.
