Hyderabad: In a proactive move, choosing awareness over punishment, the Malkajgiri Police have rolled out an innovative ‘Helmet Bank’ initiative in the Malkajgiri commissionerate, offering on-the-spot helmets to riders caught without protective gear instead of immediately issuing fines.

The programme was inaugurated at Sangeet Junction by Malkajgiri DCP (Traffic) K Rahul Reddy, who said the move aims to reinforce road safety through responsibility rather than penalties.

Under the initiative, two-wheeler riders found without helmets during traffic checks will be provided one from the Helmet Bank after furnishing basic identification details. They must return the borrowed helmet within 24 hours after purchasing their own. Officials clarified that the scheme is designed as a corrective measure and not a substitute for enforcement.

Traffic authorities said the focus is on preventing fatalities and serious head injuries, which remain common in road accidents involving two-wheelers.
“The idea is to create a culture of safety. We want people to understand that a helmet is not just a rule, but a life-saving necessity,” the DCP said.

Police personnel explained the process to commuters at the busy junction and encouraged voluntary compliance. They also cautioned that repeat offenders or those misusing the facility would face regular penalties as per traffic laws.

Encouraged by the initial response, the traffic department plans to extend the Helmet Bank initiative to other locations, with the next launch proposed in Begumpet in the coming days.
