Hyderabad: In a unique collaboration, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has tied up with State Prisons to provide wooden and metal benches to needy schools in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.
To ensure children do not have to squat in classrooms while they learn, the NTPC came up with the idea of donating benches to schools as part of its CSR outreach. As part of this, it has so far donated 1975 dual-desk benches to 41 schools in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts, benefitting 7,900 students. The NTPC has sourced duel desk benches prepared by the inmates of Warangal Central Prison and Cherlapally Central Prison. Recently, it has provided Rs 2 lakh-worth 50 duel-desk benches made by the inmates of Cherlapally Central Prison to Government High School, Azampura-I, at Amberpet in Hyderabad.
“Earlier, we used to sit on rickety benches throughout the day and it was uncomfortable. So, we could not focus. Now, we have very comfortable desks and it feels good,” says L Chetan, a Class 9 student, Azampura government school.
