Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Police Special Operations Team on Friday busted an online cricket betting racket and arrested one organiser at Saroornagar late on Thursday. Officials seized Rs 10 lakh and issued orders to freeze four bank accounts with Rs 20 lakh.
The arrested was identified as B Rajesh (28), a businessman from Saleem Nagar in Malakpet and a native of Miryalaguda Town of Nalgonda district. According to the police, Rajesh, a BTech graduate, took to betting three years ago and participated in online cricket betting as a punter from a rented premise in Malakpet.
“Subsequently, he became an agent to bookies who organise this illegal activity. As per his confession, organisers have made a channel available on the Telegram app. This channel is now subscribed to by nearly 15 lakh people,” Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said.
The organisers send links to subscribers when cricket leagues like the Indian Premier League or the Caribbean Premier League or Big Bash League in Australia are scheduled. “After the match, the organisers remit the amount to winning punters based on points earned by individuals. They use private bank accounts for this,” Bhagwat said, adding that the entire transaction was done online. In view of the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals on Thursday night, Rajesh was allegedly organising betting when the police raided the premises and nabbed him.
