Hyderabad: In one of the rarest instances, Israel released photos of three persons, two men and a woman, who pulled off the Operation Grim Beepeer, one of the most sophisticated Israeli spy operations, in which pagers and handheld wireless sets exploded crippling the fighters of Hezbollah last year.

The Operation Grim Beeper, executed on September 17 last year, is hailed as one of the most audacious and meticulously carried out covert operations in the recent history. Operation Grim Beeper targeted Hezbollah operatives across Lebanon and Syria through the simultaneous detonation of booby-trapped communication devices like pagers and handheld walkie-talkies.

The brains behind one of the most secretive operations were disclosed at a torch-lighting ceremony held in Israel on Wednesday. The trio, were seen masked in a photograph on an X post. The trio were reportedly honored for their role in the operation.

The ceremony, held annually at Mount Herzl to transition from Yom Hazikaron to Independence Day, featured the trio lighting a torch to symbolize Israel’s “shadow warriors,” with yellow ribbon pins on their attire representing solidarity with hostages held by Hamas, a gesture also seen at events like the Golden Globes, according to The Times of Israel.

What happened on September 17?

The Operation Grim Beeper took place on September 17, when thousands of pagers exploded simultaneously. This was followed by the detonation of walkie-talkies on the next day.

These devices, embedded with explosives, had been covertly supplied to Hezbollah over a decade earlier through a sophisticated infiltration of their supply chain. Mossad agents established front companies and collaborated with trusted suppliers to distribute these compromised devices, which remained dormant until activated remotely.

The impact was devastating with over 40 Hamas operatives killed, including at least 12 civilians, and thousands injured. The operation undoubtedly disrupted Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and morale.
