Orders issued for Special Cell to protect Hyderabad’s lakes

Hyderabad: Efforts to protect lakes in the city got a major boost on Monday with orders being issued for the setting up of a special cell, headed by a Special Commissioner, for the purpose.
The cell, being set up following instructions from Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao to protect and rejuvenate lakes within the Outer Ring Road will work under Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar. Lakes including the Hussain Sagar and management of the same will also be under the cell’s control.
Preparing a Master Plan for each water body by marking its Full Tank Level, Buffer zone, Green Zone and preventing encroachment by forming lake protection committees are some of the responsibilities assigned to the cell. Relief and rehabilitation for dwellers within the FTL and buffer zone will also be taken care of, the MAUD department said in the order issued on Monday. Protecting water used for agriculture, strengthening of weirs of water bodies and increasing the green cover around lakes will also be taken up by the cell.
The Special Commissioner will also take up rejuvenation of lakes involving companies as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Protection and development of water bodies adjacent to upcoming layouts and multi-storied buildings will also be given priority. The cell will work closely with the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) wing formed to strengthen the stormwater drain network in the city.
