Hyderabad: To help poor patients who have lost their limbs, the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) on Monday launched an artificial limbs facility at its already existing food cancer centre.

The new facility, inaugurated by hospital superintendent, Dr Rakesh Sahay, will be run by Endocrinology, General surgery and Orthopedic departments and supply artificial limbs to patients who undergo amputations either because of trauma or gangrenous diabetic ulcers.

The artificial limbs are made using sophisticated technology with lightweight material and 3D printing so that it fits to the exact dimensions of individual patients and allow them to walk easily without any pressure effects. The cost of each artificial limb is about Rs 25,000, which will be provided free of cost to the needy patients. Dr Sahay expressed gratitude to the Rogi Sahayata Trust, who facilitate the supply of these artificial limbs for free of cost.

After the launch of the new facility, 10 patients with lower limb amputation were supplied with the special lightweight 3D printed artificial limbs. Of them, one patient, whose both lower limbs were amputated, was provided with artificial limbs.
