Osmania University gold medal winners forced to wait for convocation cards

Gold medal winners at Osmania University were made to wait for several hours on Monday to collect identity and invitation cards needed for Tuesday’s convocation. University officials attributed the delay to a communication gap between committees overseeing the ceremony.

Hyderabad: Gold medal winners at Osmania University were forced to wait for several hours on Monday to collect their identity and invitation cards that are required to attend the university’s convocation ceremony scheduled for Tuesday. A staggering 640 PhDs across various departments under 12 faculties and 71 gold medals will be awarded during the university’s 85th convocation.

The university asked the shortlisted students for the gold medals to come to the examination branch at 10 am on Monday to collect their ID cards and invitations that are mandatory to attend the convocation. Students, along with their parents, travelled from far-off places and reached the campus expecting to collect the cards in time.

However, after they arrived on the university campus, the staff forced them to wait, stating that they would issue ID and invitation cards in 30 minutes, around 11 am. The delay extended from morning till 6 pm, when the only invitation cards were issued to students, forcing them to wait again for ID cards.

“We started from home thinking that it would hardly take 10-15 minutes to collect the cards from the university. However, we have been forced to wait from morning till 6 pm when the staff gave the invitation card and asked us to wait again for the identity card,” said a parent whose daughter secured a gold medal.

According to university official sources, there was a communication gap between the committees constituted to oversee the convocation ceremony. While the ID cards have already been printed by the printing division, they have not reached the examination branch in time. “There is a communication gap, and the entire matter has been resolved,” official sources added.
