Osmania University launches Digital Garden to document campus flora

Osmania University launched its Digital Garden, an online portal documenting 839 plant species across 131 families and 49 orders on its campus. The initiative by CBCS aims to showcase the university’s floral diversity and strengthen its commitment to a green campus.

Hyderabad: Osmania University on Monday launched its ‘Digital Garden’, an online portal documenting the rich floral diversity of its campus.

The Digital Garden is a key initiative by the University Administration to reinforce its commitment to maintaining a sustainable, green campus. Currently, 52 percent of the university’s expansive campus is dedicated to green areas, including natural forests, plantations and landscaped gardens.

The new digital platform, with a checklist of the campus flora documenting 839 plant species across 131 families and 49 orders, is an effort by the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Studies, a Centre of Excellence at the university.

Speaking after launching the web portal, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram appreciated the meticulous work put in by the scientists at the Centre for conceptualising, documenting and presenting this extensive information.

The Digital Garden allows users to explore the checklist by plant family, offering a user-friendly interface to learn about the campus’s botanical wealth.

Prof. G Naresh Reddy, Registrar, Prof. S Jithender Kumar Naik, OSD to VC, Prof. C Srinivasulu, Director, CBCS, and other senior faculty were present.
