Hyderabad: With a large number of students, particularly women joining various courses at Osmania University (OU), the university is planning to add another two new hostels to the campus.

The two hostels which will come up in multi-stored structures, one each for men and women studying in the campus colleges, will have around 300 beds in each. These hostels are in addition to the existing 18 hostels including seven for women and 11 for men on the campus which house around 12,000 students.

Apart from students studying in the campus colleges of the university, students from other constituent colleges like Nizam College, University College for Women, Koti, University PG College, Secunderabad, University College of Science, Saifabad are also residing in the hostels on the university campus.

The university administration which focused on weeding out non-boarders in the campus hostels now has decided to decentralise the hostel allotment to students. This meant that students of the constituent colleges will be accommodated in the hostels in their respective campuses rather than on the OU campus.

The university intends to provide required hostel facilities in all its constituent colleges and towards this, plans to convert one building in the University College of Science, Saifabad, into a hostel.

This apart, Nizam College Women’s Hostel which was constructed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority with an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore was inaugurated recently by the Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) KT Rama Rao. The hostel now can house 284 students.

Similarly, the university has recently opened a new 500-bed centenary hostel meant for girls on the campus. The hostel which was built at a cost of Rs 37.5 crore from the University and RUSA funds has reading rooms, a spacious dining hall, and a state-of-the-art kitchen.

“Given the high enrollments in the university campus colleges, there is a need for new hostel facilities. We are planning to construct two new hostels – one each for men and women – on the campus. This will be proposed in the upcoming budget of the university,” OU Vice-Chancellor Prof. D Ravinder said.
