Hyderabad: Demanding facilities, including accommodation for the parents who visit them, women students of the Osmania University staged a protest Wednesday overnight and continued Thursday morning as well.
Students who squatted on the main road near the Arts College complained that Centenary Girls Hostel staff insulted a student’s parent by not allowing her inside the hostel when she came to visit her ward.
Despite the student’s mother explaining that she had come from far away, she was not allowed inside the hostel for some time, students said, adding that repeated requests to the hostel staff did not yield a positive response. They demanded the university arrange accommodation for parents who visit their children in the campus.
In addition, students also raised the issue of basic amenities in the hostels, including functional street lights. The hostel inmates complained that despite repeated requests, street lights were not fixed on the road leading to their hostel.
Further, they alleged that proper food was not being served in the mess and the hostel management failed to act despite complaints.
Protesters wanted the hostel director to either resign or university administration remove her from the position for failing to act on the issue raised by students.
“Why does she have that post when she does not care about problems. We will continue to protest until our issues are resolved,” students added.
Meanwhile, OSD to VC Prof. Jitendar Kumar Naik and Campus Hostels for Women Director Dr. Y Kalyana Lakshmi called for a meeting with students.
