Hyderabad: Osmania University men’s team clinched the tennis title defeating hosts Sri Ramaswamy Memorial Institute of Science and Technology (SRM University) 3-2 in the summit clash of the South Zone Inter-University Tennis Championship at the SMR University on Thursday.

This is the first time in over a decade the OU team came out on top. The last time they won a medal was in 2013 when they clinched a bronze.


In the final too, captain G Sai Karteek Reddy played a crucial role. He defeated Ojes 7-6, 6-1 to put his side ahead. Later, Suhith downed Aditya 6-4, 6-4 to give OU 2-0 lead.

However, the doubles pair of Akash and Nikhil went down to Ojes and Krishnateja 1-6, 1-6 and a loss for Suhith – against Ojes with 3-6, 1-6 – put the scorelines at 2-all.

In the all-important deciding singles, captain Sai Karteek defeated Krishnateja 6-4, 6-1 to guide his side to victory. To his credit, Sai Karteek has not lost a single set in the entire tournament.

Earlier in the semifinals, OU defeated Anna University 3-2 to make it to the summit clash.

Final: OU bt SRM University 3-2 (Sai Karteek bt Ojes 7-6,6-1; Suhith bt Aditya 6-4,6-4; Akash/Nikhil lost to Ojes /Krishnateja 1-6,1-6; Suhith lost to Ojes 3-6, 1-6; Sai Karteek bt Krishnateja 6-4, 6-1);

Semis: OU bt Anna University 3-2 (Sai Karteek bt Lohith Badrinath 6-3, 6-1; Suhith bt Pranav 6-4, 6-3; Karteek/Suhith lost to Lohith and Pranav 4-6,4-6; Suhith lost to Lohith 2-6,2-6; Sai Karteek bt Pranav 6-3, 6-1).
