Hyderabad: Since the early seventies, the Tagore Auditorium has been a venue and witness to many historic events in Hyderabad, hosting several national and international events of cultural importance. The screening of movies in the auditorium too was something that students and movie lovers on campus and from outside looked forward to in those days.

Now, after a gap of almost three decades, Osmania University is reviving the practice of screening movies in the Tagore Auditorium for students. The renovated auditorium will screen ‘Invictus’, a motivational movie at 4 pm on Saturday for nearly 750 students from campus and constituent colleges who registered themselves on the Google platform. The university is also planning to screen one motivational movie every month for students.

‘Invictus’ is a biopic based on the book ‘Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that made a nation’ on events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World cup. ‘Invictus’, a latin expression implies ‘undefeated’, or ‘unconquered’. The film received positive critical reviews and won many academy award nominations.

The OU administration had renovated the auditorium as part of the centenary celebrations in 2018. The seating arrangements, which can accommodate close to 800 people, were refurbished and a new audio-video system was also put in place.

OU Vice-Chancellor Prof D Ravinder said the screening of the movie would enhance team spirit, motivation, perseverance and hard work among students. It would motivate them to pursue their goals with gusto without any deviations. At the same time, the auditorium would continue to host international and national conferences and cultural activities apart from screening motivational movies, popular lectures and so on to creatively engage students, he added.
