Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Police this year have booked 202 drug related cases and arrested 420 persons on charges of drug peddling. Apart from this, 23 persons were detained under the Preventive Detention Act.

Officials said the SOT and NDPS Cell officials were in constant lookout for drug peddlers and consumers and have developed a strong informant network to help curb drug menace.

According to the officials, 1,770.8 kg marijuana, 124 live marijuana plants, 14 marijuana pills, 8.55 litres of hashish oil, 141 kgs of Alprazolam, 116.28 grams MDMA, three Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) blots, 200 grams of opium, 61 Ecstasy pills and other drugs were seized in 2021.

Following instructions from Police Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra, the police across all zones have stepped up checking at hotspots on a daily basis. Officials said inter-State drug peddlers, bulk buyers, local retailers and drug transporters were put on the police radar in order to curb marijuana peddling and its consumption in the commissionerate.

Apart from this, officials seized several lakhs of rupees and vehicles used in transporting the psychotropic drug substances. The drug peddler suspects along with the seized material were handed over to the police stations concerned and further remanded in judicial remand.

“For prevention of illicit trafficking of narcotic drug and psychotropic substance in Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, the Special Operations Team along with the NDPS Cell is actively conducting raids, laying traps and subsequently busting the contraband drug rackets,” M Stephen Raveendra said.

The police teams have been building strong sources and informants network to curb the menace of drugs and other psychotropic drug substances, he added. As a result of a strong informant network, any drug movement or deal is tipped off and they have been initiating appropriate action against the drug peddlers and racketeers.

The police on the other hand are ensuring those arrested in drug related cases are convicted in the court of law. “This year so far, Preventive Detention Act was invoked against 23 drug peddlers to stop them from involving in such illegal activities in future,” the Commissioner said.

The Cyberabad Police requested citizens to inform them about drug suppliers on Dial 100 or through the Cyberabad WhatsApp number – 9490617444. Their identity will be kept confidential, officials said.
