Hyderabad: Over 400 in just six days. That was the number of drivers caught on charges of driving in an inebriated condition in the Cyberabad Police limits.

A total of 408 persons caught by the Cyberabad Traffic Police for drunk driving and without driving licence in the last one week were sentenced to imprisonment for durations ranging from one day to 14 days with the court imposing a fine as well. The Traffic Police had caught 939 persons for drunk driving and without driving licence during regular vehicle checking between August 2 and 6 at various places across the Commissionerate. Officials said all those caught were produced before court, which imposed a total fine of Rs 21.2 lakh on them.

According to the police, Miyapur stood first with 174 persons imprisoned for drunk driving, followed by Kukatpally with 104, Gachibowli 33, Madhapur 28, Shamshabad 21, Rajendranagar 19, Shadnagar 17 and Balanagar 15 persons. Officials said the driving licences of all the persons caught drunk were being sent to the Regional Transport Authority concerned for suspension.

“Drunk driving and driving by unauthorised persons have been major causes of road crashes and fatalities on roads in Cyberabad. Hence, we have been taking stringent legal action against such violators,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic) Cyberabad.

In view of the increasing number of road accidents due to drunk driving, the Traffic Police have started acting strictly against drunk drivers following due Covid safety precautions, he added.

Those who cause fatal accidents, particularly under drunken condition were being booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder as per section 304 part II of the Indian Penal Code which would result in imprisonment of up to 10 years. Also, persons who knowingly allow or accompany the drunk drivers were also being prosecuted for abetting the crimes.

The Cyberabad Police were also intimating institutions or organisations where the persons involved in mishaps were working and were being urged to conduct road safety education programmes to their employees.
