Khammam: In the wake of the spread of Covid-19, its variants delta and omicron, a paediatric Covid ward has been set up at Khammam District Quarters Hospital here.
A separate ward with 40 beds and equipped with ventilators and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) machines has been established to treat children below 12 year age for Covid, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr. B Malathi said on Thursday.
Speaking to the media here, she said that Covid cases have been reported in the district in January first and second weeks. One case of omicron was detected following genome sequencing.
As on Wednesday, around 51 patients who tested positive for Covid have been admitted to private and government hospitals. There are 26 patients undergoing treatment in government hospitals and 22 patients in private hospitals while one case of a minor testing positive was reported, the DM&HO said.
Dr. Malathi informed that the district medical and health department was fully geared to handle the third wave. There were 320 beds with oxygen facilities available and a ward with 40 beds was set up for pregnant women who tested positive for the Covid.
She further informed that a mega vaccination drive was launched in 60 divisions of Khammam Municipal Corporation on Thursday to administer the vaccine. This time the community spread could be fast, but the severity of infection could be less.
Meanwhile, the district administration has taken measures to simultaneously stop the spread of Covid as well as administer vaccine to all eligible persons. Special officers have been appointed for monitoring Covid vaccination in border mandals of Yerrupalem and Mudigonda.
Around 10.60 lakh persons have received Covid vaccine first dose and 9.13 lakh persons received the second dose. Steps were being taken to ensure 100 percent coverage in administering the vaccine second dose.
District Collector VP Gautham informed that the Covid control room was reopened with a toll free number: 1077 in the wake of an increase in the Covid cases. The public was also asked to contact the WhatsApp number: 9063211298 to get the Covid related information, he said.
