Pandemic fails to dampen Hyderabad’s growth

Hyderabad: Despite the Covid-19 pandemic that adversely affected several sectors in 2021, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) managed to execute a series of developmental works and at the same time also focussed on improving green cover as part of its efforts to achieve sustainable growth. While the town planning wing issued over 16,500 building permits, it also issued 850 transferable development rights (TDR) certificates. “With the issuance of to TDR certificates, Rs 3,500 crore was saved,” said GHMC in a press release. The Corporation instead of paying monetary compensation issued TDR certificates to property owners whose land was acquired to execute development projects. Meanwhile, with a cost of Rs 647 crore, four Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) works were executed in 2021.
The new fourlane Road Under Bridge (RuB) near Hitec City MMTS station, APJ Abdul Kalam Flyover at Owaisi- Midhani Junction, Balanagar Flyover and Road under Bridge (RuB) in Anandbagh, Malkajgiri were the facilities made available to people. Many other works were taken up to decongest the traffic and improve junctions in the city. A total of 22 junctions were taken up for development with 21.83 crore and the corporations were able to develop 20 among them in 2021.
The other developmental works by GHMC include restoration of main roads under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) and strengthening of stormwater drains, under the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP). While 124.74 km of roads were restored this year with a cost of Rs 384 crore, the tender process was completed for 17 out of 32 SNDP works. In 2021, construction of 13,610 houses built under the State government’s Double Bedroom Housing scheme was completed and at 15 locations construction of 2,510 houses has commenced.
“To make sure the poor live with dignity, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao formulated the Double Bedroom Housing scheme. Following this, at 111 locations in GHMC limits, one lakh 2BHK houses are being built,” said GHMC in a press release. The other works taken up in the same year include setting up 34 Basti Dawakhanas, building night shelters, disbursing the Rs 52 crore loan amount to street vendors granted under PM’s Street Vendor Atma Nirbhar Nidhi Scheme, entomology activities and installation of 26,836 LED lights.
