Hyderabad: Air travel between Hyderabad and India’s major metros, Delhi and Mumbai, has seen a sharp rise this year, with passenger traffic growing steadily month-on-month, according to provisional statistics released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

From January to August 2024, these routes have consistently ranked as the most popular, with thousands of Hyderabadis traveling between the cities.

According to DGCA data, 136,422 passengers flew from Hyderabad to Delhi in August 2024, while 109,924 passengers traveled on the Hyderabad-Mumbai route. The August figures are part of a broader trend showing consistent passenger growth throughout the year, with the Hyderabad-Delhi route seeing higher passenger traffic each month.

In July, 145,674 passengers flew from Hyderabad to Delhi, compared to 95,689 passengers to Mumbai. June witnessed similar trends, with 143,661 people traveling to Delhi and 94,337 to Mumbai.

The month of May saw a spike in travel with 146,131 passengers to Delhi and 101,900 to Mumbai. April marked a slight dip, with 123,479 passengers flying to Delhi and 99,889 to Mumbai.

The pattern of Delhi surpassing Mumbai in passenger numbers is evident as early as March, when 136,046 people flew to Delhi, compared to 95,517 on the Hyderabad-Mumbai route.

In the earlier months of the year, February had 127,583 passengers flying from Hyderabad to Delhi, while 97,310 passengers traveled to Mumbai. January saw 125,954 passengers to Delhi and 108,612 to Mumbai, setting the stage for a year of high travel demand on these routes.

As the demand for air travel soars, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is undergoing a major expansion to accommodate the growing passenger flow. Currently, the airport’s capacity stands at 12 million passengers annually, but it is being expanded to handle 34 million passengers in the near future. The airport’s maximum capacity is projected to reach 80 million.
