Hyderabad: Two cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have been reported in Karnataka and fear has gripped the entire nation (read: world). And why wouldn’t we all be scared? The new variant is supposed to be five times deadlier than the previous ones and there have been discussions about vaccinations being ineffective against it.
On the other hand, the world of internet somehow always digs up relevant memes and presents us with something to talk about in every scenario. Remember the 2011 movie ‘Contagion’ that everyone couldn’t stop talking about during the first wave of Covid? In the popular film, healthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find themselves in the midst of a pandemic as the CDC works to find a cure. Everyone could connect to the film.
Now, netizens have discovered yet another film from 1963 titled ‘Omicron’ and that is all people have been talking about lately. The plot of this film reads on IMDb: An alien takes over the body of an Earthman in order to learn about the planet so his race can take it over. The film has 7.1 rating and if the plot wasn’t already scary enough, you should take a look at its tagline: ‘The day the Earth was turned into a cemetery!’
“Believe it or faint,” wrote director Ram Gopal Varma about the film on social media.
Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, tweeted recently, “Someone already beat me to writing a script titled Omicron.”
The Italian science fiction-comedy film was directed by Ugo Gregoretti. The film entered the competition at the 24th Venice International Film Festival. You can now watch it on YouTube.
The craziness doesn’t stop here. There’s another 2013 movie called ‘The Visitor From Planet Omicron’. In this film, an alien comes to Earth with a botanical virus, but a gutsy Arizona widow wins him over with her garden-fresh cooking, and then tries to topple the corrupt government that put him up to it. Directed by Mike Donahue, we couldn’t find the film on streaming platforms yet but we found some trailers on YouTube.
