Nalgonda: A lorry illegally transporting 250 quintals of rice meant for Public Distribution System turned turtle at Mukundapuram of Nidmanoor mandal in the district on Sunday morning, attracting hordes of locals who took away with the rice bags in no time.

The accident occured near Mukundapuram at 4 am, but the illegal transporters escaped leaving the lorry on the spot after lifting the fallen vehicle back to its normal position on the road using a JCB. Fearing that they would be caught by the police, the occupants of the truck fled leaving behind the 250 quintals of PDS rice at the spot.

On getting to know about the incident, villagers from Mukundapuram rushed to the spot and took away all the rice bags which toppled in a paddy field leaving behind not even a single bag by the time police reached the spot.

Police suspect that the PDS rice was being illegally transported to Piduguralla of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh from Haliya in the district. Nidmanoor police filed a case and took up the investigation to identify the persons involved in the illegal transportation of PDS rice based on the registration number of the truck.
