Hyderabad: A pleasant evening breeze, kids skating around, strollers enjoying their walk on an empty road without worry of traffic, and cyclists using the main road without the threat of other vehicles – these were the scenes one could witness on Tank Bund on Sunday.

The three kilometre-long stretch donned a carefree look without its usual bustling traffic and Hyderabadis were seen greeting the statue of Buddha and enjoying a view of the lake with a cool breeze and slight drizzle.

This was made possible due to the traffic-free Sunday initiative by the Hyderabad Traffic Police after a recommendation by State MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao.

Tank Bund road decked up with designer lamp posts, granite flooring, and cast iron railing, grills, and gazebos welcomed visitors with open arms. One could feel the palpable excitement among the visitors with words like beautiful, pleasant, wow, and ‘looks like a movie set’ echoing all along the road. Families, selfie-lovers, friends, and fitness enthusiasts were all seen soaking in the peaceful environment without the any vehicular traffic.

Describing the city’s favourite evening hangout spots as alluring in its new avatar, visitors shared their experience with Telangana Today.

“There is no honking, traffic, noise, and pollution on this stretch today. For families who want to spend the evening, I would recommend this place,” said Vara Laxmi, a private employee. “We can now bring children too on Sunday evenings as crossing the road and traffic chaos is no longer an issue,” she added.

Another visitor, Gurvinder Singh from Punjab said that he was stunned by the scenic view. “Hyderabad is a beautiful city, this lake with the tall statue is worth visiting, adding to that people are friendly here,” he said.

People coming from Telugu Thalli flyover towards Tank Bund were asked to park their vehicles near Lepakshi and commuters coming from the other side of the road were asked to park their vehicles at the Sailing Annexe Club.

On the traffic restrictions, Roushan, a visitor at the lake opined that as the restrictions were for only a couple of hours on Sunday, there will hardly be any inconvenience to commuters.
