Suryapet: A new industrial unit meant for production of ethanol from grain-based extractions in Mothe mandal of Suryapet district is now in the eye of the storm. People in the surrounding villages staged protests demanding the administration to stop the construction of the factory by cancelling the licenses issued so far.
Led by the CPI(M) district unit leaders, people took out a Maha Padayatra against the factory on Friday. They fear that the ethanol unit will put the fertile soils of their lands at risk because of pollution. People from the surrounding villages including Shetti Gudem, Sarvaram, Koodali, Kota Pahad, Appannagudem, and Burkacharla, as well as several tribal hamlets would be exposed to the pollution problem. The CPI M district leaders said that pollution from the ethanol factory could cause severe health hazards.
